Such a cool moment to witness as a family. There was a time in history when most children would have had the opportunity to see the birth of an animal first hand, not through a YouTube video. And now stats say that only around 2% of Americans farm. That doesn’t account for homesteaders. And that number does account for large industrial farms where families may not live on the property or anywhere close. That also includes crop and livestock. So obviously it would be hard to nail down an exact number of those who have opportunities like we did the other night, but I don’t have to know the exact number to know this was pretty damn special.

We had our annual puppy party today! Unfortunately it got postponed to this weekend because of the weather last weekend, but we had a beautiful day and sill an awesome turnout!

This was our first family reunion without the one who started it all. We definitely missed seeing Cheyenne running with her pups, but it’s incredible to see the community that these pups have brought together and the joy they share with each of their families!

What are the sausage options for the pork shares?
For the half pork share you get to choose a mixture for your 36lb and for the whole share the same is true for your 72lb.

The chicks are just freeloaders until 18-21 weeks old when all of a sudden they think they run the place!

In all honesty it is super exciting, regardless of the market for eggs, that these chicks we started in the fall, who came out to pasture as pullets, are now productive hens.

Bowers Farm customers can look forward to eggs being available for purchase and delivery soon!

Saturday evening Bowers Farm was surprised with an incredible honor.

First, a little backstory. Growing up, I remember attending WoodmenLife dinners almost every month with my Nanny and Papa, especially the Annual Family Dinner and Awards every year.

We were personally invited to the annual dinner this year by a loving friend of my grandparents, and now our friend. We have seen her several times over the past few months and we have joked with RA about taking up my old spot as the entertainer. We wanted RA to know what WoodmenLife was so we accepted the invitation. The dinner on Saturday was filled with people who have known me my entire life, friends and community members I have grown up with around me.

During the awards and celebration portion of the event an Environmental Award was announced and then they said “The family is actually here tonight, and we would like for the Bowers Family to come forward.” As the shock was wearing away and we began to walk forward I was simply blown away! To be recognized was an honor in and of itself. To be recognized by this group was so meaningful. I spoke a brief moment about what we do at Bowers Farm and the ways we try to teach people about agriculture and what it takes to raise food. I shared about farm camp and how it’s grown. I was still in such shock I’m sure I didn’t fully capture what we do here or how important this call is to us all, but I hope our passion shines through.

Then when we were heading back to our seat I realized the quote on the plaque, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,” seeing this was almost too much. This is a quote we reference often and try to live by. We hope to not only leave this land better than we found it, but to welcome and educate others along the way, because in our eyes it’s just silly not to share it! And maybe, just maybe, once they leave this place they are filled with a desire to care for creation themselves as consumers, as advocates, as those who care about this earth and nature we all share together.

Thank you so much WoodmenLife for this incredible honor. We are humbled and even more inspired to continue doing this work!

We get lots of funny looks from other farmers and those who live rurally when they learn that we welcome people out to our farm through our airbnb and other on farm events. Too often their reaction is something like “I went into this work” or “I moved out here” so that I wouldn’t have to deal with or be around people. Sure, but that seems shortsighted to us. There are LOTS of reasons we welcome people here, but these are our top three:

1️⃣ Respect for the Land – Sharing our space allows others to appreciate and connect with the land we care for. It’s a chance to honor nature and our farming practices together. 🌱

2️⃣ Education – We love to teach and inspire others about sustainable farming, healthy living, and the beauty of rural life. It’s all about fostering curiosity and understanding. 📚

3️⃣ Financial – Running a farm comes with its challenges. Opening our doors and diversifying our income streams helps us keep the farm thriving, while also creating a welcoming space for guests to experience something special. 💸

Maybe, just maybe, welcoming others to our farm not only creates a more financially stable farm, but also builds respect for green spaces and the importance of agricultural land. And on top of it all, it’s fun! Do you welcome people onto your farm?

Time to get outside girls! The heater is off and our brooder full of chicks is daily going outside to get acclimated. They’ll be 5 weeks old next Monday and ready to start finding new homes as 5 week old pullets.

At 5 weeks they’re fully feathered and ready to be outside full time. This week they’re going out in the morning and back inside for the evening. These first few times shooing them out is a big chore but give it another day or two and they’ll be at the door ready for it to open.

What’s on the docket this week for Bowers Farm?

It’s delivery week! So make sure to place your order by Wednesday at 6pm! Maybe you’re wanting something special to cook for Valentine’s Day or maybe a selection of cuts of meat is the perfect gift for the one who has everything!

We will be interviewing some more potential staff for Summer Camp and don’t forget REGISTRATION IS OPEN! We had a record number of registrations on opening night, over 50% of the slots were filled and we had increased our spaces by over 50 this year. We do have a few spaces available each week so invite the free range farm kiddos in your life!

We had a wonderful family staying in our AirBnb this past weekend who were visiting for lacrosse matches at Newberry College. We’ll be flipping the space this week for returning guests coming in this weekend!

Of course we’ll be doing chores, bottle feeding Bella 🤪, and preparing for piglets coming soon! We hope you all have a wonderful week and don’t forget to place your delivery orders and register for camp!

It was such a blast to be a host site for the South Carolina Agritourism Association annual conference. We were one of 6 farm visits over the 3 day conference two weekends ago.

We have been members of the association for many years and attending the annual conference for probably just as many. One of the greatest gifts of the tour every year is the variety of farms and agritourism operations that are happening across the state. We are all doing things a little differently and have our own spin on how we open up our spaces and share agriculture with others.

We shared a little about our farm operations and practices, but mostly about our farm stays, rent-a-chick, and farm camp. Thank you to Laura at @boondockfarms for the incredible pictures to remember this opportunity!
