Farm Stays on Bowers Farm - Our WHY

Updated: Aug 1, 2024

We have been hosting guests on the farm since 2019 and while we certainly have some crazy stories of those who have come to stay on the farm, either through Harvest Host or AirBnb, it has been an amazing experience!  But when people hear that we host people on the farm, we oftentimes get some funny looks.

“You host people in your house?”

“Well, sort of, but they have their own space and entrance.”

“You just let people park in your front yard?”

“Yeah, but our ‘front yard’ is over 2 acres.”

We love any opportunity to share about our farm and today I’d love to share a little more with you about our farm stays and why we're so passionate about them!

Embracing Hospitality Through Farm Stays

At Bowers Farm, the spirit of hospitality runs deep, ingrained in the fabric of our operations. We have always believed in the power of radical hospitality at the farm, and this is certainly a product of our faith and interpretation of our call as Christians.  Even before we hosted officially through the various platforms, we loved having groups out to the farm to share with them this beautiful and special place.  Harvest Host and Airbnb have allowed us to expand our reach and welcome more.  We want all to feel welcome at Bowers Farm, no farming experience necessary.  Which leads perfectly into another piece of our why.

A Lesson in Respect and Appreciation

One of the most profound reasons why Farm Stays hold a special place at Bowers Farm is the transformative effect it has on guests. Spending time on a farm is not just about relaxation; it is a journey of discovery and enlightenment. The daily rhythms of farm life, from tending to animals to picking the garden, and just the ability to be in nature and hear the quiet offer a glimpse into the beauty of this way of life. By immersing oneself in these activities and this environment, guests gain a newfound respect for the labor that goes into putting food on their tables and a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature and humanity.  We believe that the more opportunities people have to visit and experience a farm will increase their awareness and advocacy for Agriculture and the protection of agricultural land when there is a risk of development.  I know it’s a big hope for having guests here on the farm, but we don’t think it’s too big to be true.

This Place Isn’t Really Ours

In addition to a call to hospitality and a desire to educate others on where their food comes from and grow a respect for this work, ultimately, we know this land is not really ours.  We are merely stewards of this beautiful place we call home for a short period of time.  There is a Native American proverb that says, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”  We know life on 90 acres is not possible for everyone.  We know not everyone feels called to farming, and that’s totally fine and great, but we want to be able to share this beautiful place that we are blessed to call home with others. We want those who live in the fast-paced life of the city to be able to come and be reminded of the beauty of nature - with a coffee on the porch hearing the birds chirp or a fire by the garden one evening or a picnic by the creek.  It is one of our greatest joys to share this place that we love so much, and if we are merely borrowers, sharing it with others, helping to grow their knowledge and respect of places like this, will certainly leave this place better than we found it – not only because of our farming practices but because of the growing respect of the space.

Your Invitation to Bowers Farm

It’s true, the more you interact with the public, the more you open yourself up to some interesting characters.  But also, the more we open ourselves up to people visiting the farm, the more we are reminded of the good in people.  We have met individuals and families from literally all over the world who are traveling to our area for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes it’s work, sometimes it’s a funeral, sometimes it’s their Spring Break trip or an end of the summer getaway. No matter the reason, we are so excited to have them.

Through our farm stays, we offer not just a getaway but a profound experience that nourishes the mind, body, and spirit. Whether you seek solace in nature, a deeper understanding of agriculture, or simply a moment of peace, we welcome you with open arms.
